Safe Blood For Africa Overview

• A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation whose purpose is to help prevent
the spread of HIV/ADIS and other blood transmitted illnesses by blood transfusion
in sub-Saharan Africa.
• Safe Blood for Africa is now actively assisting multiple African countries by providing technical assistance, training, and supplying resources to several countries to help secure their blood supply.
• Safe Blood for Africa Foundation is providing technical assistance with the Nigeria Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) to assist with the development of the Nigerian National Blood Transfusion Service (NNBTS) with the support of the U.S. CDC PEPFAR Program, USAID and the ExxonMobil Corporation.
• SBFA is providing technical assistance to the Botswana National Blood Transfusion Services through the U.S. CDC PEPFAR program
• SBFA was retained by The African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships, as part of a collaboration between the Government of Botswana, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Merck Company Foundation/Merck & Co., Inc., to substantially increase the number of Voluntary Non Remunerated Blood Donors, and introduce technical systems to the Botswana National Blood Transfusion Services.
• SBFA has a significant blood safety and transfusion testing programs in Equatorial Guinea, Angola and the Akwa Ibom Region of Nigeria funded by the ExxonMobil Corporation.
• SBFA is currently providing technical support, training and test kits to 57 health centers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo under a 4 year cooperative agreement with USAID.
Establishing a safe and adequate blood supply in Africa has the potential to save an estimate 10 and 20 million lives over the next 20 years.
